Retire in Brookhaven

Volunteer Opportunities

Many retirees still like to be active in their community.  Brookhaven has a number of places that really could use the help from those who would like to help.  Here are a few places of interest.  Let us know if you have any questions about other activities you would be interested in learning about.

Hospitals

The volunteers at King’s Daughters Medical Center are a vital part of how our hospital serves our patients, family, visitors and employees.

More than 60 volunteers assist the hospital by donating their time on a weekly basis to help operations in the facility operate smoothly. Volunteers at KDMC have been serving the hospital for more than 40 years and each person finds a special place within the facility to apply their time and talents.

Front Desk Volunteers:

Volunteers at the front information desk act as hosts and hostesses for the front door of the hospital. They are the first face visitors see when entering the lobby of the facility and always project a positive attitude and warm smile to those they greet.

These volunteers often help locate wheelchairs for patients in need; help assist visitors find the correct room number of the person they are visiting and deliver cards and flowers to patients in their rooms.

Gift Shoppe Volunteers:

When the Gift Shoppe opened in Jan. of 2004, volunteers were eager to take part in the business to insure that 100 percent of the profits are used to fund projects throughout the hospital. Their time and dedication each week enables the Gift Shoppe to operate without employing a paid staff. That means more monies for projects and equipment purchases throughout the facility.

Volunteers in the Gift Shoppe greet customers and assist them in finding that perfect gift for a patient, family member or just someone celebrating birthdays or another special event.

ER Volunteers:

The ER Volunteer program uses volunteers to assist the everyday function of the Emergency Room – a place where patients and family members need special attention when being admitted. These volunteers assist family members who are waiting on word from doctors and nurses by obtaining information when they can for visitors and loved ones. The men and women who serve in the Emergency Room also assist the staff in keeping blankets stocked, the waiting room straightened and clutter-free and the coffee fresh. Many of these volunteers have described that working in this area of the hospital fulfills a need in themselves to assist others during a time when comfort is needed the most.

Reader-to-Patient:

The Reader-to-Patient Volunteer program began in the Fall of 2004 and continues to grow. These volunteers visit the hospital once a week and travel from room to room offering patients - and sometimes even family members – the opportunity to listen to a short reading. Readings are chosen from a large variety of books, the daily newspaper, even the Bible.

Readers are available to all age groups, and readers have found that the elderly as well as the young enjoy to be read to aloud. Through reading aloud, patients are given the chance to mentally escape from their situation for a short time – proving to be very good medicine.

Auxiliary Volunteers:

The KDMC Auxiliary is a group that meets at the hospital once a month to enjoy each other’s fellowship as well as work on constructing Froggie Pillows for patients aged 1 to 6 years. The ladies construct about 50 Froggie pillows each month for distribution to pediatric patients. The Auxiliary organization is also responsible for hosting the Jewelry sales and Book sales several times during the year, which generates funds for Auxiliary projects at the hospital. They also group together for scheduled outings – Volunteer Voyages - to other cities and towns to enjoy a day-long road trip of shopping, eating out or sight seeing.

The Auxiliary elects officers each year, including a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. This group is complied of volunteers already working shifts in all areas of the hospital.
