Spring Garden Extravaganza & Farmers' Market - 2008

The Annual Spring Garden Extravaganza & Farmers’ Market, sponsored again by Lincoln County Master Gardeners, will be held in Railroad Park, downtown Brookhaven, from 9a.m. to 4p.m. on Saturday, April 26.  A perfect place to get ready for spring, with a variety of vendors selling flowers, potted plants, herbs, pottery, fresh produce and other items for your yard and garden.

Our speaker at will be Dan Gill a horticulturist with the LSU AgCenter, a position he has held since 1980. Before moving to Baton Rouge to take on statewide responsibilities, he was headquartered in New Orleans. While there, he became established as a reliable source of helpful, useful advice on lawn and garden topics through his media work. He is host of a live, weekly call-in show on New Orleans radio station, WSMB and is featured in weekly gardening segments on the Channel 4 Morning News Show. Readers of the New Orleans Times-Picayune have long benefited from his weekly column, called "The Weekend Gardener." Now people across Louisiana are receiving his advice in regular "Get It Growing" radio, television and newspaper stories.

Dan received a bachelor's and master's degree in horticulture from Louisiana State University. He has been recognized for his many horticultural achievements by such groups as the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, the Metro Area Horticulture Foundation and the LSU AgCenter.

In addition to his many media appearances, he is the author of Month-by-Month Gardening in Louisiana and co-author of the Louisiana Gardener's Guide and the recently published Month-by-Month Gardening in Texas.

There will also be special booth with activities for children and gardening.  Please join us for some good food, music and cures for “spring fever.”

Projects in the Works

Camellias are blooming up and down the the streets in Brookhaven.  Downtown Brookhaven Planters are now filled with Sasanquas, replacing the overgrown Bradford Pears and Holly trees.  This project was completed in 2005.

We are working with Dr. Hegwood at LSU do scan and document the Vi & Harry Stone Camellia collection so they can be made available to the all people interested in the variety of camellias they left to LSU Gardens.  Dr. Hegwood advised that they are getting the slides scanned by professional photo firm in Georgia and hope to have slides in the internet in a few months.

A project completed:  The Thomas Perkins Memorial Camellia Garden at the Lincoln County Library is growing very well. It has a nice collection of camellias from China that Thomas introduced to America.  Also a very nice Thomas Perkins and Boozie B have their place of distinction in the Garden.   Please stop by for a visit.  There are some updated pictures of how the garden has grown on the Lincoln County Master Gardner Homepage.  Go to the links to get there.
